Scottish Natural Heritage

Scottish Natural Heritage is a government body with offices throughout Scotland and with a remit for both the conservation and enjoyment of all aspects of Scotland's natural heritage.

The aims of SNH are to:

  • safeguard and enhance Scotland's natural heritage, particularly its natural, genetic and scenic diversity;
  • foster awareness and understanding of the natural heritage;
  • promote quiet enjoyment of the natural heritage and to facilitate responsible public access to it;
  • work in partnership with others for the benefit of the environment;
  • improve the natural environment in and around urban areas;
  • encourage environmental sustainability in all forms of economic activity.

The primary purpose of the SNH Advisory Services is to provide advice to both internal and external customers, based on the interpretation of technical, scientific and other information.

The work of Advisory Services is managed within Management Units:

  • Habitats and Species provide advice and develop SNH’s understanding of the habitats and species and the earth science interests in Scotland’s natural heritage. This includes inventory work and information on the distribution and abundance of natural heritage features as well as trends in them and assessment of their national significance.
  • Land Use and Management provide advice and develop SNH’s understanding of the ways in which the natural heritage can be sustained whilst utilised or affected by people for economic or recreational gain. This includes landscape advice and advice about the promotion and development of informal countryside recreation and access to the natural heritage, advice on agriculture, forestry and fisheries as well as advice on mitigating the impacts of built developments and the role of town and country planning.
  • Awareness and Involvement provide and develop SNH’s understanding of the values to be derived from environmental education, interpretation, training and community participation.
