The School of Life Sciences is one of three Schools in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The School of Life Sciences is engaged in a wide range of research areas including biochemical pathology, cell biology, environmental biology, environmental pollution, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, information technology and computer modelling, molecular biology, protein chemistry and enzymology. The major research teams within the school include: Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology Research Group The group is a leader in the field of developing bioassays and biosensors which may act as an `early warning system` when assessing the level of pollution in a terrestrial habitat or waterway.Biomedicine Research Group The group is principally focused on the molecular and cellular toxicology of inhaled air-pollution particles. In addition associated research is carried out within the fields of parasitology, immunology and fungal infections of the lung.Environmental Biology Group The group focuses on the interactions between animals or micro-organisms and their environment, especially in the sea and freshwaters. Current projects include the joint European project OAERRE which studies the effects of nutrient enrichment of enclosed coastal waters. Other subgroups research subjects such as Biological Oceanography, Ecology & Pollution and Wildife & ConservationAnti-Cancer Drug Design & Delivery Research Group This group researches the chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer and viral or protozoal infections. The group has designed novel anti-cancer drugs which selectively inhibit cancer cells by interfering with normal functions of cell proliferation.
