ECRR > Member organisations > MRC Human Reproductive Sciences Unit
The Unit is the UK's leading institution undertaking research in reproductive health with integrated programmes on male and female infertility, contraception and hormone dependent diseases (e.g. prostatic, testicular and cervical cancer, and endometriosis). The research of the Unit, though funded for its human application, impacts upon agriculture and veterinary medicine, the conservation of endangered species, industrial and domestic toxicology, and global environmental change. Research facilities The Unit is located at the University of Edinburgh'’s Medical School at the new Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France. It is part of a new £58 million purpose-built Institute for Medical Cell Biology. The Institute brings together three interdisciplinary groups focusing on reproductive biology, inflammation research and cardiovascular research, and comprises a grouping of some 600 researchers.Staff and research students The Unit's staff of about 80 is supplemented by some 13 PhD students, along with clinical fellows and visiting research workers. The Unit has a strong track record in training and supervising PhD students.Technology transfer Fundamental discoveries are translated into clinical practice through the Unit's spin–off company, Ardana Bioscience and the Medical Research Council / DfID funded Contraceptive Development Network (CDN).
