Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling

The Institute is the leading international centre in aquaculture and is the largest of its kind in the world. Graded 5 in the 2001 UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), it brings together cross-disciplinary, world class researchers to meet the wide range of challenges faced as aquaculture grows to meet global demands.

Research focuses on fundamental questions relating to strategies for sustainable aquaculture, whether in modern commercial markets or in feeding poor communities in developing countries.

The Institute currently has a staff of more 110 and 120 postgraduate students with an annual operating budget of approximately 5 million pounds.

The Institute has links with many other academic institutions, throughout Europe, and further afield, including:

  • Asian Institute of Technology [Thailand];
  • Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute [Thailand];
  • National Agricultural University, Mymensingh [Bangladesh];
  • College of Fisheries, Mangalore [India];
  • Universidad Michocana, Morelia [Mexico];
  • Myazaki University [Japan].

Disease and environmental management services are provided to industry as well as project design, development and management through Stirling Aquaculture, which received the Queens Award for Industry in 1990.
